Grassland/wetland

Enough rain for grasses, not trees.

Prairies receive between 25 and 100 centimeters of rain each year.  Limited seasonal rainfall and fire prevent forest growth allowing grasses to dominate. Potholes left by glaciers fill with groundwater forming ponds and marshes.  Migrating birds and other wildlife rely on these wetlands for food and nesting.
