Course Description:
Education 105 is a one-credit, graded course that will enable you as a learner to think critically about any aspects of your college life. Many academic learning strategies will be discussed: study methods, effective note-taking, preparing for tests, as well as time management techniques, memory aids, and how to address the type of learner you are. How to access UWSP support systems will also be addressed. As an active learner, you will participate in all class activities, along with reflecting, writing about, and sharing your insights with your peers and myself.
Assessment:
Your course grade will be determined by portfolio assessment. You will keep the assignments you do throughout the class and assemble them in a portfolio due by 11:00 AM on the last day of class (see syllabus for exact date). There are no quizzes or exams; your grade will be based upon work completed and submitted in the portfolio in a timely manner. Attendance IS important, and lack thereof will be taken into consideration in your final grade. Grades for assignments will be weighted as follows: Journal, 35%; Reflective (in class) writing, 35%; Notes and/or Rewrites, 15%, and a Self-Assessment Essay, 15%. I will collect your in-class writing and journals for comment. All writing will be returned for inclusion in your portfolio.
*Journal: You will be asked to keep a journal with one entry of at least page for each class session, numbered and dated. These are to be written outside of class. I will collect journals for comments during the third and sixth weeks of class.
*Reflective Writing: During class I will ask you to write a paragraph reflecting on the activity on which you are working that day. Some will be completed individually, and others will be done in a group. I will collect these writings at the end of each class session and return them the next class with comments. This necessarily makes attendance part of your grade because you cannot reflect if you are not there.
*Notes and/or Rewrites: You will be learning several note-taking strategies in this course. You will need to include at least 10 pages of photocopied notes from at least two courses in your portfolio in order to demonstrate knowledge of good note-taking guidelines.
*Self-Assessment Essay: During the final week of class, you will write an essay of at least two pages, typed, double-spaced, discussing your learning stylewhat works for youand what you have learned about how you learn. The typed paper, including notes and drafts, must be included in your portfolio.
*Late Policy: I will accept assignments turned in after deadlines for of the grade equivalent were it to b handed in on time, except for the portfolio. Exceptions should be explained to me in writing, detailing the medical or personal emergency.
