NATIVE AMERICAN RECRUITMENT INITIATIVES

Enrollment of Native Americans at UWSP has averaged between 50 - 70 students in recent years
(includes full-time, part-time, graduate and undergraduate).  In recent years, the NAC has worked
cooperatively with the UW-SP Admissions Office to contribute to the recruitment process.   In an
effort to increase applications submitted by potential Native American students, NAC staff
periodically visit selected high schools, tribal colleges, and technical schools throughout the state
that are adjacent to Native American communities and have significant Native American populations.

NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT RETENTION

Once a Native American student is admitted to UW-SP, the NAC offers a variety of supportive services
to them.  The NAC seeks to assist Native American students with the transition to college and community
life.   As part of a retention initiative targeted at Native American students, the NAC strives to make
personal connections with Native American students, continuously seeking ways to improve short & long
term student success.

In addition, NAC personnel serve important roles as academic staff advisors to Native American student
organizations at UW-SP.
