Peer Mentoring
Program
Multicultural Resource Center
University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point
At UWSP, the MCRC
Mentoring Program helps new multicultural freshmen survive their first
semester in college. It also prepares them in successfully
completing a college degree. Multicultural Affairs (MCA) staff
believes that the first and second semesters are the most important
semesters for students. This period of time is crucial for students
to get connected to campus resources such as student organizations,
student employment, student government, and other activities. These
vital resources have proven to enhance student retention at UWSP.
The MCRC Mentoring Program aims to meet such goals.
Our program involves three
Multicultural Affairs staff members:
Ron Strege
(Director of the MCRC)
Andrew Gokee (Outreach Specialist of the
Native American Center)
Rosario Alemparte (Outreach Specialist of
the MCRC)
We have upper-classmen that service as peer mentors, working 7-9 hours per week during
the first semester of the academic year and 1-4 hours per week during the
second semester. Peer mentors and staff meet on a weekly basis to discuss
the progress of the new students.
This is a fun and involved program where you can have a friend who will
give you the right advice!
