Interview with a Nutritional Minor Student

Ka keung Ng or Francis

Ka keung Ng, or "Francis" his adopted American name, has come all the way from Hong Kong to study at UWSP. Francis is a sophomore majoring in Business and getting a minor in Nutrition.

This might seem like an unusual combination however, Francis decided on this combination because he wanted to set himself apart from others in the Business field. He thinks that one area that holds specific interest for him would be in Marketing for the Food Industry.

You might wonder how in the world Francis ever picked UWSP for school. Nonchalantly, Francis stated that agents in Hong Kong had suggested UWSP. When asked about the biggest differences between back home and here, he says that it never snows or gets below freezing in Hong Kong.

Francis has already completed 2 classes in Nutrition and is taking a third. What is most interesting about the classes he has taken? He really enjoyed FN 106, Introductory Foods because they got to cook all kinds of things in the Cooking Lab. While he is quite busy with classes, he still finds time to do some occasional cooking in the kitchen at his dorm. His favorite dish is a Chinese recipe that, unfortunately for us, he said he couldn't translate into English (Perhaps it's a fantastic family recipe that he doesn't want to reveal). When asked about any differences between American and Chinese cooking, he said that in China you never follow a recipe but cook by taste, adding more or less of an ingredient depending on ones desires.

Watching cooking programs on TV sparked his interest in food and nutrition. One thing that he misses is being able to buy some of the Chinese ingredients he would like to cook with.

Another thing Francis misses from back home is that there he is able to use his native language, which is Cantonese. However, he does have a group of about 15 friends here with whom he can speak his native tongue. One nice thing about his move here is that he finds the people in Stevens Point to be very friendly and life is simpler here.

He recommends that if you have an interest in Food and Nutrition make sure you take classes in Biology and Chemistry because it isn't all about cooking and eating.
