Family and Consumer Science Graduate Certification
The program consists of 19 - 22 credits which can be applied toward progress on one of UWSP’s existing master’s degree programs in Human & Community Resources and Education.
Participating students will work in cohort setting. Courses are offered in non-traditional formats, on-line, face-to-face and hybrid, to accommodate practicing professionals.
The program can be completed in 18 months.
Requisite Courses
Applicants who do not currently hold a teaching license must complete coursework to fulfill Wisconsin licensure requirements. These course requirements must be fulfilled prior to admission and included on transcripts or applicants must include an approved plan on how these requirements will be met.
The following UWSP undergraduate courses or their equivalents are needed:
- Physical Science Course
- Biological Science Course
- History 211 – US to 1877
- History 212 – US since 1877
- One Fine Arts Course (any art, dance, drama, film, interior architecture music or theater)
- One Literature Course
- Political Science 101 or 201 – American Government
- Psychology 110 – Intro to Psych (Any Psych or HD 261/265 is acceptable)
- Education 205 – Teaching for Pluralism – 1 credit
- Education 200 – Portfolio I - 1 credit
- Education 300 – Portfolio II - 1 credit
- Education 351/551 – Teaching the Exceptional Child - 3 credits
- Education 381 or 702 – Educational Psychology - 3 credits
- Education 586/386 – Reading in the secondary schools - 3 credits
- FCS 398 Student teaching in family and consumer - 12 credits
along with FCS 400 Family and Consumer Scienses Education - 2 Credits
Retention in the Program
Students are expected to maintain satisfactory and steady progress in the program and must have at least a 3.0 grade point average upon completion.
This program is offered based on the number of professionals seeking graduate-level FCS certification. A minimum enrollment must be reached in order for these courses to be offered. If that number is not reached the courses will be rescheduled for the following calendar year.
