Program
This trip begins with a flight from Chicago to Vienna, Austria, on the morning of July 20th. We will then transfer to our first destination, the small town of Bad Gleichenberg, and spend the next three days getting to know the rolling hills of this unique spa town (July 20-22).
Bad Gleichenberg, one of the oldest and most important “spa” towns is in one of the most interesting yet least-known areas of Austria. Its water spa- related treatments go back to Roman times. Sitting in a scenic valley of rolling hills and vineyards, Bad Gleichenberg will offer us a chance to stretch our legs, take leisurely strolls in landscaped parks, try out a water treatment, and hike the many well-marked trails in the immediate area. Local cuisine will provide many spectacular meals after a day of exploring.
On July 23rd we will head southeast about 40 miles to the romantic city of Graz. As a historic city of world heritage, we’ll spend the next 2 days exploring dreamy lanes, inner courtyards and extensive parks. A trip to Graz would not be complete without visiting its many shops and also the Kunsthaus (House of Art). There will be so much to see that we will be hard pressed to entirely explore this great city.
July 26-29th will find us exploring the Austrian Alps. By now we will be ready for a little more challenging terrain and have the opportunity to visit high meadows, deep valleys, enchanted villages and relax in a wonderful hotel complete with its own brew pub. Daily hiking excursions will encourage participants to meet the Austrian Alps up-close and personal. Lots of film or a good digital camera will be put to use here! The scenery will be spectacular and the hiking do-able for the fit tourist.
July 30-August 2nd we will head to the Capital of Austria, the renowned city of Vienna. It was founded around 500 BC and was originally a Celtic settlement. Now a city of 1.7 million people, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It currently ranks 3rd in the world for quality of life. Daily walking excursions will allow us to explore its music, theatre, opera, museums, architecture, parks and gardens.
Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to learn more about Austria, its people, history and terrain! Jim Miller from the FH Joanneum University in Austria will be our local guide, providing his expertise in the culture and history of the area.
