The School of Health Promotion and Human Development (HPHD) coordinates bicycling and hiking trips abroad as outreach programs for adults. Development of wellness themes is key to these experiences which encourage healthy living activities for all adults. As HPHD encourages its traditional students to take part in study abroad through the UWSP International Programs Department as part of their overall undergraduate experience, participant recruitment for the Adventure Tours program is aimed at adults as a means of encouraging them to lead healthy lifestyles. Keeping this group fit and active assists in meeting national health goals set by the federal government in their report “Healthy People 2010.”

THE PRIMARY GOALS OF THE PROGRAM ARE AS FOLLOWS:
  • Increase global awareness and cultural sensitivity. Both leaders and participants gain a better understanding of selected countries’ histories, cultures, social structures, cuisine, languages and customs. Faculty leaders bring back these new perspectives to their classrooms.

  • Enhance the image of the School of Health Promotion and Human Development. As a national leader in the discipline of Health Promotion, the School continues to seek new avenues of encouraging wellness activities. Bike/hike trips offer significant opportunities to promote both the School and UWSP in the state, nationally, and abroad.

  • Encourage adults to take the initiative to lead more healthy/active lifestyles by engaging in vigorous physical challenges, planning and implementing pre-trip conditioning programs, and successfully completing an adventure tour.
