Athletic Training Major
Introduction
The School of Health, Exercise Science
and Athletics (HESA) offers a comprehensive athletic training major
which leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. The professional program of
athletic training is centered in educational opportunities surrounding
the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic

Trainers’ Association Board of Certification Examination. Each course in
the major is designed to provide the student with entry-level
competencies outlined in the NATA’s role-delineation studies. The major
also allows students to add minors to develop professional credentials
that enhance marketability. Possible minors include Biology, Computer
Information Systems, Gerontology, Nutrition, Psychology, Social Science
& Health, and Strength and Conditioning.
Benefits of UWSP
The UWSP Athletic Training program is
the first comprehensive major in the state. The department offers
students a cutting edge learning environment in which excellence in
teaching is of prime importance. Small upper-level class size, active
academic advising, superb laboratory facilities and internship rotations
promote academic success.
The Athletic Training instructional
staff consists of members who all have completed athletic training
curriculum degrees. Each has an understanding and commitment to the
teaching/learning process involved in an athletic training educational
program. The UWSP Athletic Department hosts 18 mens’ and womens’
intercollegiate athletic teams which provide field experience for the
student. The facility boasts state-of-the-art equipment in modalities
and rehabilitation. It also houses a cadaver laboratory to assist in
learning with anatomy and a classroom that is dedicated to athletic
training courses.
The Athletic Training major works closely with physicians from Aspirus,
Klasinski Clinic, and St. Michael's hospital who contribute to the
athletic training educational program. Also involved are other allied
health professionals from the nearby Rice Clinic, Physical Therapy
Associates, McDonough Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Marshfield
Clinic, Sport and Spine Clinic, and Bone and JointClinic.
