S. Christian Collins, Piano Sonata No. 1, 1st Movement. Performer: S. Christian Collins Composer's Narrative The allegro movement of this piano sonata was a great exercise in thematic development. The first theme (opening) is fragmented and in major; the second theme (middle of first half, with triple-note accompaniment pattern) is fluid and in minor. These two contrasting ideas are manipulated and developed throughout the course of the piece, particularly in the second half. The models for this composition might be obvious to some, as the piece bears resemblance to works by Beethoven, Brahms and Domenico Scarlatti. Unlike most sonata-allegro movements, however, the repeat of the first half is fully written, complete with embellishments and an inversion of the opening theme's dynamic contrast. |
