Izamal is a celebrated colonial town about 70 kilometers (40 miles) east of Merida. One of its distinctive features is the bright yellow color of most of its downtown buildings.

| These are views east of Izamal on the way to Chichen Itza. Yucatan is actually pretty dry, all the water is subsurface in the karst aquifers, so there's a lot of open scrub and bedrock is rarely far below the surface. | |
