| Hungary was a Roman province called Pannonia, a name that crops up often in hotels and
theaters. The ruins of a Roman amphitheater are on the Buda (west) side of the Danube.

Not very ancient - it dates from the late 19th century - but a fabulously overdone piece of Gothic fantasy. |

| Poor Margit was king Bela's daughter, who was pledged to enter a convent if the Mongols spared Hungary, which they did, because the Khan suddenly died and the chiefs all returned to Mongolia to elect a successor. It's not recorded how Margit felt about entering the convent. | |
