Graphics for the Web

Formats

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group compression format)

Good for full color or gray-scale images (photographs or photo-realistic artwork)
Continuous variation in color, such as highlighted or shadowed areas, are more accurately represented and smaller in size than GIF images.
Picture quality depends on the amount of compression
Faster to download than gif (depending on level of compression)

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)

Useful for images with few colors.
Good for line drawings.
Two formats:
Non-interlaced - download one line of pixels at a time
interlaced - builds low resolution image to high resolution (gives reader a preview but are not any faster at loading)
Supports transparent background (GIF89a)
