subduction

Subduction is the process whereby a more dense, lithospheric plate is pushed under a lighter lithospheric plate when they collide. The oceanic plate melts as it pushes  toward the interior. Molten rock material, magma, rises to fuel volcanic activity at the surface. (See also plate tectonics; lithospheric plate)
