Preparing for Exercise 7Midlatitude Weather

Exercise 7, "Midlatitude Weather and Weather Map Interpretation" applies the the process of weather formation in the midlatitudes discussed during lecture to real world situations. You'll interpret the weather across the United States from weather maps and what likely caused them. You are responsible for all questions in this exercise. Assignment
Before starting....You should review your lecture notes and online textbook reading about "Weather Systems" especially those sections about fronts and their depiction on a weather map. Make sure to read the introductory material for Exercise 7 noting how weather elements are depicted on a weather map. Part 1 Weather Map InterpretationHere's a few pointers on some of the questions ...... Question 1. When you fill out the table for question 1 make sure to use the full value, not abbreviated value, of air pressure in millibars. See the introduction to the exercise on how to read the pressure from a weather station model. Question 7. To answer item b, think about the definition of a front and what is occurring along a front. Question 9 deals with uplift mechanisms that cause precipitation. These are reviewed in the introduction to the exercise. To determine the uplift mechanism is to consider the physical environment of where the precipitation is occurring. For instance, precipitation associated with frontal uplift will be occurring along and ahead of a front. Precipitation associated with convective uplift will occur where the air is warm, so you should expect this to occur most often in southerly locations dominated by mT air masses. Orographic uplift will occur on the windward side of mountains. To determine orographic uplift will require a map that shows earth topography. Question 11 has you describe the temperature and moisture characteristics of the air masses in the two different seasons. You can do this by simply stating the characteristics as "the air mass is cool and moist". or "the air mass is cool and dry but warmer than it was during the winter". Use the dew point to get a notion of the moisture content as it is determined by the humidity level of the air, the higher the dew point, the higher the humidity. Go to activity submission form
