The Occlusion Process

An occlusion occurs when cold and warm fronts merge. This can happen in two ways. A cold occlusion occurs if very cold air lies behind a cold front and cool air ahead of a warm front. As the air of the warms sector is "squeezed", the warm front is lifted above the surface. A warm occlusion occurs if cool air is located behind a cold front and colder air ahead of the warm front.
