Natural Vegetation of North America map

The names of the natural vegetation formation classes/biomes of North America depicted in the map below are slightly different from what you learned in the online modules. You will have to know the mapped distribution below for Unit Exam 3. The greatest difference is the subdivisions of the midlatitude forests into Mixed Conifer-Deciduous, Deciduous, and Southern coniferous. Though broadleaf temperate forests are found along the Gulf Coast, a substantial amount of southern pine forest are found in Southeastern United States as well. Names of associated soils are given in red.

As you study, compare the vegetation map with your North America climate map to find the spatial correlation between climate, soils and vegetation. Click here to go to a blank map for printing.
