Before starting .....
Thoroughly read the introduction to the lab.
Review the material in the online textbook concerning
computing
soil water budgets. There is a
a
narrated video on water budget calculation too. This
is one of the most difficult exercises in the lab manual.
Don't hesitate to send me
questions should you run into problems.
Assignment
- Lab Manual Exercise 9
- Assigned Questions:
- Part 1: 1 - 6; skip 7,8 and 9
- Part 2: All Questions
- Part 3: Skip
- Part 4: Skip
Here's a few things to keep in mind for some of the
questions....
Part 1 Soil Moisture Budget Tables and Graphs
Question 1 has you complete a partially completed
water budget table. Make sure to start in the month following
the darkened ST cell, which for this water budget is July. So
you'll start your calculation in August. Do your calculations
month-by-month as the values in one month often depend on the
previous month's conditions. Starting in August calculations
are done in the following values in order:
1. P-PE
2. ΔST
3. ST
4. AE
5. D
6. S
Then move to the next month and continue.
Questions 2-6: see the introduction for clues as to
how to answer these questions.
Questions 7,8 & 9 - SKIP THESE
Part 2 Comparative Field
Capacities
Question 1 has you complete another water budget
this time for Houston. Use the same procedure as you did
above.
Questions 2 - 6 refer to the introduction and online
textbook chapter "The Hydrosphere" for help in answering these
questions.
Feel free to drop by during your scheduled lab time for
individual help with the lab should you need it. Leave your
completed lab in the "Drop Off" bin on my office door, Science D331. I will
check it and place in the "Pick-up bin beneath.
