Preparing for Exercise 3
Atmospheric Temperature

We'll be working on parts 2 and 3 of exercise 3, "Atmospheric Temperature". In part 2, you'll be comparing the temperature characteristics of three midlatitude locations, one located on the east coast, one on the west coast, and one in the interior of the United States. You'll be computing seasonal temperature gradients along a north - south transect through the United States in part 3.

Before coming to lab....

Before getting started on the exercise, review your lecture notes for "Air Temperature Patterns" and bring them to lab. Pay particular attention to the influence of water bodies, continentality and air masses on temperatures. Review the meaning of a "seasonal temperature lag period". Also review the cause for the latitudinal variation in air temperature we see especially in the mid-latitudes. Carefully read through all the introductory material for Lab 3 in the lab manual, especially the instructions on computing a temperature gradient. Don't forget to bring a calculator.
