The following is an actual e-mail I received from a Geology 100 student 10 days after he was scheduled to take the final exam for the Spring 2003 semester:

Due to a lack of organization on my part, I accidentally missed the final on Monday and did not realize this until now.  I would appreciate it if you could take the time to meet with me to discuss what I can do about my mistake.  I would really like to take the exam but I also understand that it is my fault and you are not responsible for helping me out.  I will stop by your office tomorrow to talk.  My phone number is 341-xxxx if you would like to give me a call.  Thank you - xxxx xxxxxxx
