STATISTICAL SIGNIFICANCE

There are some general principles for interpreting the statistical significance of correlation using what is known as the correlation coefficient (r value).  r ranges from -1.0 (a perfect negative correlation) to +1.0 (a perfect positive correlation).

A strong, positive correlation:  r > 0.7
A weak, positive correlation:  0.3 > r < 0.7

A strong, negative correlation:  r < -0.7
A weak, negative correlation:  -0.3 < r > -0.7
