Early geodetic surveys suggested that Greenland had moved roughly 1,300 feet farther away from Europe between
1823 and 1870 (a rate of 28 ft/yr!).  This was later shown to be incorrect, but not until after Wegener had proposed
his hypothesis of "continental drift".
