The Central Valley of California was created by faulting that caused mountains composed of crystalline rock to rise up on either side.  The valley itself is filled with sediments deposited by the ocean (Marine Sediments) and by rivers flowing out of the mountains (Continental Deposits).   Groundwater occurs within these sediments under confined (artesian) conditions.
