THE PORTUGUESE BEND LANDSLIDE

Exercise 7 is posted on the  State University of Buffalo Case Studies in Science web site.   The case study is separated into three parts, beginning with a newspaper article written about the Portuguese Bend Landslide, a slope movement that began in 1956 and continues today (see pages 206-207 in your textbook).  Be sure to answer the questions from all three parts!   This landslide is notable for causing the first major class action law suit brought about as a result of a geologic event.  It was also the impetus for California to pass the nation's first law requiring geologists to have a professional license to provide consulting services.
