TOP TEN REASONS FOR
NOT TAKING GEOLOGY 1OO
#5. You don't
like to work in small groups.

Some people don't like working in small groups, but this is an important aspect
of the course. 20% of your grade comes
directly from participation in a learning
group, and your test scores will reflect the effort you put into this
experience. So
if this sounds unappealing, be advised that
I have no provisions for students who opt out their small groups.
#6.
You can't get assignments
turned in on time.
Because I do not
grade the small group assignments, some students think that they aren't very
important; and from this
erroneous assumption they conclude that it doesn't
matter whether or not the assignments are turned in on time.
On
the
contrary, it is precisely because I
do not grade your answers that I expect the assignments to be turned in on
time!
You must find someone in your group who is responsible enough to
carry out this task! There is no excuse for missing
the deadline!
#7.
You don't like to
think:

Because I do not
grade the small group assignments, some students think that they aren't very
important; and from this
erroneous assumption they conclude that it doesn't
matter whether or not they spend much time thinking about the
answers. On the
contrary, the small group assignments are designed to help you learn
critical thinking skills, and the
amount of effort you put into these
assignments will be reflected in your exam scores. Although I do not
grade for right
or wrong answers,
I will not give you credit if you do not
answer the questions, or if you do not make a reasonable
attempt to answer the
questions correctly.
