Our first view of Site 4, shown above on the left, reveals white pine and jack pine. These two species of pines are difficult to distinguish from the photo, but the litter layer revealed two different types of pine needles and helped us determine these two species. We can also see some oaks (remember they hang on to their leaves). The photo above on the right also shows some birch (the trees with the white bark) and some maple (we looked at leaves in the litter layer). Lots of down trees are scattered throughout this site, and the photo below shows these down trees. The photo below also provides the best glimpse of the understory. Use all three photos to take notes on Site 4.
