This field trip is structured such that "stops" contain activities for students to complete, and "hikes" are animations with slides and commentary on the landscape being traversed. If you do not want your students to visit all the stops, or watch all the animations, you may select only those features you want from the "Trip Itinerary" page. Each "hike" and each "stop" is linked on the topographic map and as text links below the map. Thus, you may have your students work through the "stops" and "hikes" in sequential order following the links at the bottom of each "stop" or "hike" page, OR you may have your students return to the "Itinerary" page after each selected "stop" or "hike" and select what you want them to do next.

At Stop 2, students are instructed to draw a topographic profile. The map and graph paper required are Adobe Acrobat PDF files for printing. The map scale is not exactly 1:24,000, but it is as close as I could get it. Students are instructed to assume it is 1;24,000. If you want original topographic maps, they include Lake McDonald East, MT (1968) and Mount Jackson, MT (1968). The graph paper is designed for a profile with a 5X vertical exaggeration going from 4400 to 7000 feet. The graph paper is 10 squares per inch. You may have students use their own graph paper, and specify some other vertical exaggeration if desired.

There are question sheets for each stop or associated activity. These are also Adobe Acrobat PDF files. You may want to have your students print these files before starting the trip.
