- Calculating Your Grade: worksheet for calculating your grade.
- Quiz & Exam Grade Distributions: grade distributions and letter grade cutoffs.
The final course grade is based on 3 unit exams, 5 lab quizzes, lab exercises and assignments. These are weighted as follows::
Exam I 17 %
Exam II 17 %
Exam III 17 %
Lab Quizzes 39 %
Lab Exercises & Assignments 10 %
Total 100 % Tests
- Always bring a #2 pencil and an eraser to class on test days because all tests (exams and quizzes) are computer scored.
- Always bring a calculator to class on test days; you are not allowed to share calculators with neighbors during tests, so if you forget your calculator, you may have to do math the long way.
- All cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and put away during tests.
- All tests (exams and quizzes) consist of multiple choice and true/false question. Some students incorrectly think that multiple choice questions or true/false questions only require regurgitation of memorized material. This is not true! You will be required to solve problems and apply what you know. You will be required to think about what you have learned.
- All tests (exams and quizzes) are collected at the end of the test period; you may not keep your tests. You will have the opportunity to find out what questions you missed and what the correct answers are, but you may not keep your tests. Answer keys will be posted for approximately one week in one of the glass-covered bulletin boards on the third floor of the Science Building. You are always welcome to stop in during office hours to go through your tests with me.
Exams
Exams 1 and 2 will take place during a lab period and exam 3 will take place during finals week. There are 75 questions on each exam, which you will have two hours to complete. Exam questions are based on material covered in lecture, lab, the textbook, and any other required readings or assignments.
Lab Quizzes
Lab quizzes will take place during the first hour of lab on the designated day. There are 25 questions on each quiz and these are based on material covered in lab exercises. The questions will require you to solve problems similar to ones in the lab exercises.
Lab Exercises & Assignments
Lab exercises require you to work through examples and applications of concepts and ideas discussed in lecture. Students may work together on lab exercises and may request as much help from me as required. Exercises are due at the end of lab class unless otherwise stated. In an ideal world, all lab exercises would be graded, but given the number of students in the class, and the number of lab assignments, there just isn’t sufficient time to grade each answer individually. As a result, lab exercises are graded as either complete or incomplete: you either get full credit for completing the exercise, or no credit if you do not complete the exercise. This is why the lab exercises combined with other assignments are worth only 10% of your final grade. Your understanding of lab material will be assessed through the lab quizzes. Answer keys to all exercises will be available in class, and will also be available on the Internet after the lab is completed. You are responsible for checking your own answers, correcting your mistakes, and asking for help when needed.
