Features found on the topographic map of Mt. Whitney, California:

  • Cirques - Seven cirques are shown by the curved red lines. The semicircular shape of the contour lines indicates the bowl shape of a cirque. The close spacing of brown contour lines shows the steep headwall, or the back-wall, of the cirque. Some of these cirques contain cirque glaciers and some contain tarns.
  • Glaciers - Shown by a white background (ice) and blue contour lines. There are several small cirque glaciers on the map.
  • Horn - Shown by closely spaced, closed contour lines, indicating a steep mountain peak. Horns are generally surrounded by cirques.
  • Moraines - There are several moraines shown by brown dots/speckles. These are most likely end moraines.
  • Tarn - A glacial lake located in a cirque shown with blue (water) on the map. There are three labeled tarns on the map.
