Features shown on the topographic map of Mt. Abbott, California:

  • Arete - Indicated on the map by closely spaced contour lines revealing a steep sided ridge. The arete separates two U-shaped valleys.
  • Glacier - Shown on the map by a white background (ice) and blue contour lines. One glacier is labeled in red, but six other glaciers or partial glaciers also appear on this map. These are all examples of cirque glaciers.
  • Horn - Shown by closely spaced, closed contour lines, indicating a steep mountain peak.
  • Moraine deposits - The unconsolidated material typical of moraines is indicated by brown dots/speckles on the map. The could be either an end moraine or ground moraine.
  • Paternoster lakes - The chain of lakes within the glacial valley is indicated by blue on the map, as are the connecting rivers.
  • U-shaped valley or glacial trough - A relatively flat, wide bottomed valley is indicated by widely spaced contour lines on the map. The valley walls are shown by contour lines located closer together indicating the steep sides of the valley walls.
