Hooker Glacier, New Zealand, is an example of a valley glacier. There is a fair bit of debris on the surface of the glacier, which appears as dark gray, while fresh snow on the glacier surface is white. Lateral moraines are evident on both sides of this glaciated valley, appearing as ridges of unconsolidated material deposited by the glacier.
