The photo on the top shows the cirque that contains Gunsight Lake. The low spot in the center of the cirque is an example of a col. In this photo we are looking towards the southwest. On the map, the camera shows the approximate location where the photo was taken. The col appears on the topographic map as a low spot on the ridge that runs from Mt. Jackson, along the dashed black line, towards Sperry Glacier. As contour lines cross ridge tops, they bend downhill, and in this example, that means the contour lines on either side of the col point towards the col. The photo to the left shows the col from Lake Ellen Wilson; in this photo we are looking towards the northeast. This is the same photo shown on the cirque page.
