490 Research JournalYou are to maintain a 490 journal, or work log, of all time and activities that you spend working up your research project. You will use the campus load version of MicroSoft Excel, a spreadsheet at available at \\GeoDept1\Classes\Gg490\2003\. Your journal counts for 10% of your 490 grade. You should start immediately recording the hours, dates, and activities of ANYTHING you do related to your research project. This information will enable you to devise realistic cost estimates, such as you might submit for contract or departmental bids. I can tell you first-hand that the immediate inquiry for almost every project proposal is "How much?" This is not an idle, or crass, question. Research is expensive, and "real world" competition often examines the cost attributes of research proposals very closely. I want you to get some experience, using a project that you will be intimately familiar with (yours), at estimating time, materials, and facilities needs. Odds are that sometime during your career you will have to generate and submit a project proposal bid. Learn this now. This, too, is reality, and experience with it makes you more marketable. An example of our journal format and cost calculation tables, following federal guidelines, are as follows:
