last collected by A. Hoist in 1889 on Nakondo Shima
arboreal island forest dweller endemic to Bonin Islands
specimens in Frankfurt, St. Petersberg, and London
disappeared after introduction of rats, cats, dogs, and pigs with first settlers in 1830; probably hunted for food, and half the forests cleared by 1930
