Paint Gap Area

Here the reconnaissance project begins.

From the campsite we follow the trail 3 km northward to the Park border, then eastward 1 km to the boundary monument. From here we trace the boundary 4 km westward, then traverse 3 km southeastward across the fossil-bearing javelina (Kjf) and Aguja (Kag) formations back to camp.

Advisory: STAY TOGETHER; keep visible! This is very dry and sunny desert, even in winter. Sun protection (sunscreen, long sleeves, hat, and eyeshades), leg protection (boots, socks, and gaiters), THREE liters of liquids, and both a radio and flashlight with spare batteries are required for EVERY person on each hike.
