3 Dimensions of Environmental Variability

Latitude

  • Everyone knows that conditions differ depending on how far north or south you are. Be aware that the change tendencies often reverse in the opposite hemisphere.

Altitude

  • Each altitudinal zone roughly corresponds with a latitudinal zone

Continentality

  • In purest form, continentality is simply the relative proximity of an ocean moisture source. However, the reality (as in China here) is that continentality is nearly always confounded with altitude effects.

Atmosphere Structure

Atmospheric Layers (p. 78)

(Each dot repesents 1% of all matter in the column of air)

Thermal & Pressure Trends (p. 49)

  • Each new layer begins at the altitude where the warming or cooling temperature trend ceases
