Required Textbooks:

Earth Structure, by van der Pluijm and Marshak; 1st Edition, 1997

Structural Analysis & Synthesis; by Rowland & Duebendorfer; 2nd Edition, 1998

    Structural Methods CD-ROM, 2001

Course Objectives:  To understand deformation processes affecting the Earth’s surface that result in the development of faults, folds and mountain belts.

Course Requirements: Students are required to engage in the process of scientific inquiry through attendance, active participation and successful completion of all classroom exercises, homework assignments and field trips. Students are also expected to read all assigned materials and to ask informed questions regarding the subject matter. As suggested in the UWSP Student Handbook, students should invest 2 hours of outside reading and review of material for each class contact hour.

Grading:                50%: 3 Tests

20%: 1 Cumulative Final Exam

20%: Homework, laboratory assignments, class participation, field trips.

10%: Presentation and Paper

Lab Exercises:     Due at the beginning of the following week’s lab. Late labs may not be accepted without prior approval of the instructor. Lab exercises must be neat and precise for full credit.

Homework:        Each homework exercise has a due date listed. No late homework exercises will be accepted without prior approval of instructor. Late homework exercises will receive no credit. Homework exercises must be neat and precise for full credit.

Final Exam:        8a.m. Tuesday December 21, 2004

Attendance Policy:  Attendance is expected for all classes. All absences shall be noted. A student whose final average in on the border between two letter grades will receive the lower grade if he/she has more than 3 absences without a legitimate excuse (illness, death in family, etc.), approved by the instructor.

Disabilities:            Students with disabilities of any nature should meet with the instructor during the first week of classes to accommodate student needs.

Materials Required: Scientific calculator, colored pencils, graph paper, compass, protractor, pencils (4 H), rulers (triangular engineering ruler, centimeter and inches scale ruler), tracing paper and a BIG eraser.

Class Notes:           Available through Microsoft Outlook Public Folders and on-line at:

                              http://www.uwsp.edu/geo/faculty/hefferan/geol320/mainpage.html.

Secrets of Success:  Read textbook chapters before class. Attend class and ask questions. Review the textbook chapter after class to ensure full understanding. Get to know your classmates, form study groups and communicate with your instructor. I encourage you to visit during office hours or whenever it is mutually convenient to discuss structural geology. Increased interaction between all participants will dramatically and positively impact our learning and enjoyment! Structure is fun!
