BURGESS SHALE

Fossils preserved within the 530-540 Ma Burgess Shale (Stephen Formation) of Canadian Rocky Mountains represent one of the richest faunal assemblages on Earth. First studied in 1909 by Charles Walcott of the Smithsonian Institution, the Burgess Shale remains perhaps the greatest fossil locality on Earth.
