THE GRAND CANYON-
ANGULAR UNCONFORMITY
Observe the photograph below and locate the angular unconformity. This angular unconformity separates inclined Late Proterozoic Grand Canyon Series sedimentary rocks (below) from Early Paleozoic sedimentary rocks (above). The inclined nature of the lower sequence suggests that tectonic activity folded the Grand Canyon Series, after which uplift and erosion occurred (creating an unconformity surface), followed by subsidence and deposition of the overlying flat-lying Early Paleozoic sediments.
