Diagrams of Meandering Rivers

A Diagram of River
Landforms

This diagraram shows the various landforms associated with most rivers. As the water flows over the alluvium the river works to erode the material, to create many differant landforms. Did you see any of these landforms during your trip along the Tomorrow River? What is the source for the alluvium of the Tomorrow River? Which stop did you see a floodplain? Did you find any landforms that were similar to the scarpand terracesthat are shown in the above diagram?

If you were to explore almost any meandering river you would find the landforms that are shown in the diagram to the right. These features are unique to meandering rivers, and are the result of many nautral process that work to shape our world.

What stop did you see an example of a cutbank? Do the portions of the Tomorrow River that you have seen have any oxbow or incipient oxbow lakes? Where does bar and swale topography occur in the river meander? Does the Tomorrow River have a stream flowing next to it? What is the name of that type of stream?

A Diagram of a Typical Meandering River

A Diagram of Meander

A meander will shift laterally from A to A' resulting in the erosion of the cutbank and formation of a point bar. Notice the the thalweg and where it flows within the stream channel. Where would you expect erosion and velocity to be the greatest?
