Cartography Option
Cartography is the art, science, and technology of making and using maps. A thorough
background in geography and mapmaking techniques is needed in order to design and prepare
graphic representations for navigation, data management, and spatial analysis. Cartography
is changing rapidly and has expanding opportunities for study and application.
There are two types of professional careers in cartography, one in the technical or
construction aspect of mapmaking, the other in map planning and research. Potential
employers of cartographers include the federal government, planning agencies and
commercial mapmaking companies.
