UWSP Foundation

Gift-giving Options

One of the major responsibilities of the UWSP Foundation is to advise donors on how to make the most efficient possible use of their charitable assets. Initially, this means choosing one of the two forms which gifts typically take:

  1. Gifts to Operating Funds: These immediately expendable gifts provide a crucial supplement to the University's operating budget. These are either unrestricted gifts or they are gifts that are channeled to support specific areas at UWSP that are especially meaningful to the donor.
  2. Endowment Funds: All are permanent investments, working year-in and year-out to perpetuate the names, the memory and the values of their donors. With an endowment fund, only the earnings are spent, and the principal remains untouched. Many gifts of endowment provide scholarships, which help assure that good students are not denied the opportunity to enroll because of cost. They also help attract or retain especially qualified students. Other endowments support essential programs.

Either gift can take a number of forms, including several important alternatives to cash gifts. These choices are made possible because the UWSP Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization, and gifts to it are tax deductible according to law. Federal income, estate and gift tax laws all are designed to encourage individuals and their families to make charitable gifts to organizations like the UWSP Foundation.

Hence, an important part of the Foundation's advisory function is to recommend a sound charitable plan or tax strategy, which can sometimes permit people to give considerably more than a simple cash gift would.
