FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS COURSES I
First Year. First Semester. 4 crs.

First Year. Second Semester. 4 crs. Prereq: 101 or by placement exam.
- 102 CHINESE (spring semester/alternate years)
- 102 FRENCH, GERMAN, SPANISH (fall & spring semesters)
The goals of these elementary courses are to introduce you to the language and culture. They are designed to develop all four language skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing and furnish basic information concerning life styles and cultural values.
The 101 and 102 courses will -- help you acquire oral and written control of basic structural patterns, like asking and answering questions, aid in acquiring an active vocabulary which enables you to communicate in routine situations, develop your ability to understand short texts and discuss the information you read, and promote cross-cultural sensitivity and the ability to understand native speakers.
200/201 or 300/301 CHINESE (alternate years) Second Year. Two Semesters. 8 crs. Prereq: 102 or by placement exam.Intermediate modern Mandarin with Chinese characters and development of speaking. 211 FRENCH, GERMAN and SPANISH (fall semester) Second Year. First Semester. 4 crs. Prereq: 102 or by placement exam. 212 FRENCH, GERMAN, SPANISH (spring semester) Second Year. Second Semester. 4 crs. Prereq: 211 or by placement exam. The goals of the 211 and 212 courses are to help you acquire oral and written mastery of basic grammar patterns and expand your active vocabulary. The courses offer a grammar review and an interesting selection of reading materials dealing with the exploration of cultural differences between life in foreign countries and life in the United States.
