Course Objectives

This course will provide students with a broad understanding of the ethical, biological and political issues encompassing the conservation of biodiversity.  Concept of biodiversity and conservation biology will be discussed.  We will address threats to biological diversity at four levels: ecosystem, species, genetics, and cultural.  Lectures that focus on the subject of biodiversity conservation will be designed to enhance management skills of the participant at local, national and international level.  Online and in class discussions will focus on case studies that evaluate the successes and shortcomings of conservation biology applications in the field.  The course will discuss the effects that economics, education, politics, and lifestyle have on this topic. We will also explore how principles from two related disciplines, Restoration Ecology and Landscape Ecology, are related to Conservation Biology
