The federal FAFSA processor picks about 30% of student applications for verification. By this they are telling the school to verify the data, i.e. to check and make certain the FAFSA was filled out correctly. Sometimes students are selected because they have improbable data, sometimes the data is outside of a threshold, and sometimes it is a random pick.
The school must acquire the necessary data from the student (and parents, if the student is considered dependent for financial aid) to perform the necessary checks. The school either mails a paper copy or emails a link to the form that must be completed and submitted, and requests the necessary 1040’s and W-2’s as well. The form cannot be transmitted back through the computer, because other forms must be returned with it.
Please act quickly when informed of the need for verification. An award will not be made, nor will funds be disbursed, before verification is complete.
