Staff Resource Recovery Procedures

 

PRACTICING THE THREE Rs: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE 

WHAT TO, HOW TO, & WHERE TO 

MIXED PAPER includes: 

  • Books

  • Container board

  • Card stock

  • Paper based envelopes (labels and windows OK)

  • Magazines

  • Paper (white, colored, ledger, shiny/coated, NCR, onionskin

  • Computer printouts

  • Facial tissues

  • File folders (manila, Pendaflex)

  • Tablets (include backs)

  • Keypunch cards, index cards

  • Telephone books

  • Newspapers

  • Post-it notes

  • Clean paper plates

  • Paper bags

  • Intercampus envelopes

  • Napkins

 No Need to Remove: 

  • Tape

  • Rubber bands

  • Staples

  • Spirals from notebooks

  • Labels

  • Paper clips

PLACE in containers for PAPER.   

PLEASE NO FOOD OR RESTROOM WASTE.

 

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD/CONTAINER BOARD includes:

  • Corrugated boxes

  • Paperboard boxes

  • Pizza boxes

  • Beverage containers

FLATTEN all boxes and containers. 

REMOVE food and sauce containers, etc. from pizza boxes. 

TAKE flattened boxes to the building�s designated RESOURCE RECOVERY area.

GLASS includes:  

  • Clear containers

  • Amber containers

  • Green containers

 Must be transparent and translucent.

PLEASE NO OPAQUE CONTAINERS.

 

RINSE

REMOVE rings and covers.  Labels need not be removed. 

PLACE in containers for GLASS

NO ceramics, window glass, Pyrex glass, dishes or mirrors. 

 

Fluorescent tubes are considered hazardous waste and require special handling. 

RETAIN original packing to store and ship spent tubes.

CANS includes: 

  • Aluminum cans

  • Metal cans

  • Aerosol cans

  • Paint cans

DRAIN aluminum cans.

RINSE metal cans.  FLATTEN.

REMOVE plastic covers (if removable) from aerosol cans.  DO NOT remove spray nozzle.

BRUSH all residual paint from paint cans and let cans air dry. Paint cans do not need to be rinsed but they cannot contain more than the residual paint after thorough brush cleaning.  REPLACE the covers.

PLACE in containers for CANS.  Large quantities of paint cans should be taken to the building�s designated RESOURCE RECOVERY area.

PLASTICS includes: 

  • Plastics No. 1, 2, and 6

  • Examples are bottles, tubs, and pails

REMOVE metal and plastic rings and covers from bottles, tubs and pails.  Labels need not be removed.

RINSE. 

PLACE in containers for PLASTIC

#6 PLASTIC - PACKING MATERIALS (POLYSTYRENE) includes:

  • Filler packing (saucers and peanuts) material

  • Formed, rigid packing material

BAG OR BOX filler packing material.  Formed packing material may be left in boxes. 

TAKE to the building�s designated RESOURCE RECOVERY area.

TONER CARTRIDGES includes cartridges from:

  • Printers

  • Photocopy machines

  • FAX machines

RETAIN original packaging to store spent cartridges. 

SEND to Central Stores (Maintenance/Materiel Building) via campus mail in the original packaging if available.

INK JET CARTRIDGES 

RETAIN original packaging. 

SEND to Central Stores (Maintenance/Materiel Building) via campus mail in original packaging if available. 

TRANSPARENCIES includes:

  • Transparencies

  • 3M Flip-Frame Transparency Protectors

  • 3M Flip-Frame Transparency Protectors with Pre-View

  • 3M Transparency Sleeves

SEND to the Resource Recovery Center Office, 112 Maintenance/Materiel Building via campus mail.

ELECTRONIC MEDIA includes: 

  • Microfiche

  • Video

  • Audio tapes

  • CDs

  • Floppy disks

SEND to the Resource Recovery Center Office, 112 Maintenance/Materiel Building via campus mail or call the Resource Recovery Center (2552) for assistance if large quantities are involved.

CELLULAR EQUIPMENT

Cellular equipment must be disposed by State of Wisconsin procedures.  All cellular equipment that is no longer usable or being used must be disposed though the State of Wisconsin Swap Shop in Madison.  Surplus Sales is the depository at UW-Stevens Point for cellular equipment.

COMPUTERS AND COMPONENTS

Information Technology (4357) has been delegated the authority to review computers, printers and other computer hardware to assure equipment functionality prior to delivery of items to Surplus Sales.

Equipment and parts determined to be reusable will be distributed on campus as needed.  Equipment can often be repaired by using spare parts obtained from pre-surplus sales equipment.  Property that is beyond its usefulness to UW-Stevens Point will be sent to Surplus Sales for sale to the general public.

BATTERIES includes batteries for:

  • Pagers

  • Flashlights

  • Radios

SEND to the Resource Recover Center Office, 112 Maintenance/Materiel Building via campus mail.  Batteries from vehicles and maintenance operations should be placed in the storage container for batteries located outside the Auto Shop of the Maintenance/Materiel Building.

APPLIANCES

Wisconsin Act 335 bans appliances from the landfill.  SUBMIT a Surplus Declaration form to Surplus Sales with an account number to dispose of nonfunctioning hazardous appliances (freezers, refrigerators, microwaves and dehumidifiers, etc.).  There is a $20 charge per appliance to dispose of these items at the Portage County Landfill from where they are recycled.  There is no charge for non-hazardous, nonfunctioning appliances.  These are recycled through the university�s waste metal recycling program. 

AGGREGATE MATERIALS includes:

  • Mortar

  • Concrete

  • Concrete block

  • Bricks

  • Plaster

  • Blacktop

No wood, metals, paper, etc.  CALL the Resource Recovery Center Office (2552) to make arrangements to recycle the material or PLACE in the dumpster for aggregate materials (concrete) located behind the Maintenance/Materiel Building.

PALLETS 

Includes all wooden pallets�including broken pallets.  TAKE to the UW-SP Resource Recovery Center located at the north end of Lot J.  STACK pallets on the grass along the north fence line.  For assistance with pallets call the Resource Recovery Center office at 2552.

METALS includes:

  • All types of metals

  • Furniture

  • Equipment

  • Nonfunctioning, non-hazardous appliances

  • Some nonmetal material is acceptable

SUBMIT a Surplus Declaration Form to Surplus Sales to dispose of furniture, equipment and non-hazardous appliances.  Waste metals generated during remodeling or construction projects or routine maintenance can be placed in the dumpster for waste metals located behind the Maintenance/Materiel Building if there is no resale value.  Contact Surplus Sales to determine resale value.

SURPLUS PROPERTY 

Disposal of all surplus property must be channeled through Surplus Sales (ex. 4474).  COMPLETE and SEND a Surplus Property Declaration form to Surplus Sales at 601 Division Street.  Upon receipt of the form, Surplus Sales personnel will call the department to make arrangements to pick up surplus property or arrange for delivery by the department.  Surplus Sales is open for public sales on Fridays from 1-5 p.m. and is also available to assist with specific departmental needs.

GOODWILL

A goodwill roundup is held at the end of each semester to assist residence hall students with disposing of unwanted items. 

Items include:

  • Reusable clothing
  • Linens
  • Bedding
  • Books / magazines
  • Games
  • Toys
  • Sporting equipment
  • Small (working) appliances
  • Paper tablets
  • Food in sealed containers

Clothing that is not reusable may also be included and will be reused as rags or in manufacturing paper.

TAKE items to the front lobby during the drive period.

PLACE in gray cart labeled "Good Will."

Students may drop off furniture in good condition, lofts, wood, bicycles, televisions, computers, microwaves, and refrigerators that are in working condition at Surplus Sales.  Surplus Sales is located at 601 Division Street (next to Hardees).  Materials may be dropped off at the dock facing Isadore Street.

WATCH for announcements as the end of the semester draws near.

OTHER includes: 

  • Antifreeze

  • Ash from the heating plant

  • Cooking oil

  • Oil filters

  • Tires

  • Waste oil

Yard waste and pre-consumer vegetable waste are composted.

HOW TO: REDUCE WASTE 

  • Use e-mail instead of paper messages.

  • Use the university newsletter or message of the day for announcements.

  • Use the �Pointer� and Student Television for announcements.

  • Establish a designated �bulletin board� area for announcements.

  • Use departmental bulletin boards to post announcements instead of campus-wide distributions.

  • Use overhead projectors instead of making copies.

  • Circulate correspondence instead of making copies.

  • Avoid purchasing disposable items.

  • Buy concentrated cleaners, etc.

  • Use reusable containers for lunches instead of plastic bags/wrap.

  • Remove yourself from mailing lists.

  • Buy products that use little or no packaging.

  • Purchase products that are reusable.

  • Use reusable mugs for beverages.

  • Use both sides of a sheet of paper, or, cut into message sized sheets after using one side.

  • Purchase cloth bags for shopping.

  • Use electric hand dryers instead of paper toweling.

  • Use cloth/reusable towels instead of paper toweling and hand dryers.

  • Use the proper container when disposing of waste and recyclable materials.

  • Require suppliers to take back containers, packaging materials, and pallets.

 HOW TO:  REUSE

  •  Compost food and yard waste and use as fertilizer.

  • Use rechargeable batteries.

  • Buy beverages in returnable bottles.

  • Use reusable containers to store food.

  • Reuse shopping bags.

  • Donate unwanted items to charitable organizations or hold a garage sale.

  • Contact Surplus Sales to dispose of unwanted equipment and supplies.

  • Use pails generated in food service operations as workstation or residence hall room recycle containers.

  • Use reusable mugs for beverages.

  • Reuse pallets for shipments.

  • Return unwanted bags to stores.

  • Return plastic dry cleaning bags and hangers to dry cleaners.

  • Purchase products and supplies manufactured with recycled fiber content.

PRACTICING THE FOURTH R: RESOURCEFULNESS

  • Unless correspondence is absolutely confidential, do not use a regular envelope inside an intercampus envelope.

  • When using labels on intercampus envelopes, place them over previously listed names instead of taking up new space.

  • Send out announcements via message of the day requesting that interested individuals request copies of brochures, information, etc. instead of sending out brochures and flyers campuswide.

  • FAX or e-mail correspondence instead of sending through U. S. mail.

  • Assist coworkers by preparing materials for recycling as indicated.

  • Check with the Learning Resources Center before recycling magazines, periodicals, or newsletters.

RECYCLING POLICY

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point shall implement and operate a resource recovery program.  The program shall be consistent with good environmental practices and meet or exceed all national, state and local laws, regulations and ordinances. 

The goals of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point resource recovery program shall be: 

1.        To reduce consumption of recyclable & non-recyclable materials through wise procurement practices.

2.        To reuse existing materials in creative ways.

3.        To recycle material allowed by current technology.

4.        To meet or exceed all state laws for recycling percentages and time of compliance.

5.        To involve all students, employees, and contractors of the campus community in the recycling effort.

6.        To seek cost efficient means for accomplishing these goals.

The general purpose of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point resource recovery effort shall be:

1.        To comply with Wisconsin Act 335.

2.        To conserve natural resources & provide materials for manufacturing and remanufacturing.

3.        To encourage the purchase of recycled materials by individuals, departments, & other units of the university.  

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point waste and resource recovery policy prohibits faculty, staff, students, nonresident students, contractors, guests of UW-Stevens Point, and residents of the community from removing materials from recycle and waste containers or storage areas for personal gain.  Nor is it permissible for faculty, staff, students, nonresident students, contractors, guests of UW-Stevens Point, and residents of the community to utilize the resource recovery program for personal use.

Contractors of UW-Stevens Point are encouraged to participate in the resource recovery program in conjunction with contracted projects and services.  Contractors are responsible for properly preparing and delivering recyclable materials to the Resource Recovery Center.   Contractors are prohibited from using university dumpsters to dispose of waste.
