Position: Chemical Hygiene Officer

Position Description:
The UWSP Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) is designated to oversee implementation of the UWSP chemical hygiene plan for all departments/units that carry out laboratory operations. The major responsibility for this position is to serve as the UWSP Chemistry Department’s Chemical Hygiene Officer while providing additional services to other campus units with laboratory functions. The position will also serve as the chair of the UWSP Chemical Hygiene Committee. The goal of the position is continual improvement in laboratory safety, environmental performance, loss control and overall compliance throughout the institution. The primary responsibility includes chemical safety but will also involve environmental, biological, radiation, emergency management and other laboratory safety and compliance aspects. 

Department/University Description:
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) is a comprehensive state university with an enrollment of approximately 9,000 students.  The campus is located in Stevens Point, which is centrally located in the state and ranked as one of the “Top 100 Places to Live.” This position will reside in the UWSP Safety and Loss Control Department and report to the Director.

Qualifications:
Qualified by training and experience to provide expert technical guidance and direction in the development and implementation of all provisions of an effective laboratory chemical hygiene plan to include overall safety, loss control and environmental performance. Knowledge of OSHA, WI Department of Commerce, WI DNR/EPA Regulations, NFPA Codes, and laboratory specific standards and best practices. Bachelor degree in related field required with Masters or PhD preferred. Additional experience with biological and radiation safety a plus. Additional certifications or advanced training desired. Minimum one year of relevant experience required, preferably at an institution of higher education. For additional information on the job and qualifications see the complete job description at

Appointment Date: January 1, 2010 or as soon thereafter as possible  

Terms of Employment: This is a twelve-month, 80% academic staff position with a probationary towards indefinite appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. Wide range of employee benefits.
