Position: WIST Laboratory Technician       

Position Description:
The primary responsibility of the WIST laboratory technician position will be to work with WIST and UWSP staff on laboratory services and outreach education projects.  Part of the job responsibilities will include safe operation and calibration of pilot laboratory equipment including the UWSP pilot paper machine, refiner, digester, and Quantum mixer.  All of this equipment can only be operated in the presence of trained faculty and/or staff to ensure standard safety procedures.  This position will train and supervise students how to safely and accurately run specialized laboratory equipment.  Analytical testing using standard methods and reporting will be required along with the safe handling and make down of chemicals.

Department/University Description:
The University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point is a four-year, primarily undergraduate, comprehensive university with an emphasis on teaching. The Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology (WIST) is a new program being developed at UWSP.  It is a joint program of the College of Natural Resources and College of Letters and Science.  Its focus will be on the development and dissemination of sustainable technologies and associate social/economic interests.  It will build on the current academic and research strengths of UWSP and seek to broaden those strengths through collaborative with relevant public and private partners.

Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree is required in a technical field, such as: laboratory technician, biology, biochemistry, chemistry or engineering.  Prior training in pilot scale manufacturing systems, and laboratory analyses is preferred.

Appointment Date: December 1, 2009 or as soon as possible.  

Terms of Employment: Academic Staff, 12 month grant funded position with potential for renewal.  Full health benefits through the University of Wisconsin System.
