Position: Academic Advisor

Position Description:
The Student Academic Advising Center seeks an energetic, organized, team player with a strong commitment to student success, background in student development, and knowledge of academic advising.  The Academic Advisor will provide academic advising to students who have not declared a major, as well as to those who are exploring academic alternatives.  This individual will also work collaboratively with the staff in performing the administrative duties associated with running an advising center.   The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is a leading comprehensive four year liberal arts institution located in scenic Central Wisconsin, equidistant between Chicago and Minneapolis.  It has consistently been named one of the top public mid-western universities in U.S. News and World Report's college rankings.  UWSP, with a current enrollment of 9,100 students, is one of 13 degree granting campuses in the University of Wisconsin System. Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide academic advising to undeclared students and students in-transition on an individual and group basis:

  • Help students define and develop realistic academic and career goals
  • Assist students in planning educational programs consistent with their abilities and interests
  • Recognize students’ needs and make appropriate referrals
  • Monitor progress toward educational/career goals
  • Address linkage between academic preparation and the world of work
  • Provide information on the advising/registration process
  • Maintain accurate and timely student records
  • Review and make decisions on credit overload requests and Satisfactory Academic Progress appeals

Collaborate with office staff, as well as faculty, staff and students in furthering the goals of the Student Academic Advising Center.  Work independently, as well as in concert with the office team in fulfilling the unit’s mission and conducting day-to-day business related to advising activities.

Assist with Center programming activities that may be delivered through workshops, Internet technology, class presentations, outreach, and other settings.

Partner with other academic professionals to deliver collaborative programming.   

Prepare written communications and other materials for distribution to students and various units on campus as needed.

Qualifications:    

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred  
  • Professional work experience in a higher educational setting highly preferred
  • Strong commitment to student success; familiarity with effective student-centered  academic advising
  • Excellent writing skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; flexibility; strong sense of integrity
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds/experiences preferred
  • Attention to detail; self-starter; quick learner with strong record keeping skills

Appointment:
This is a full-time, Category A academic staff position.  The contract period includes a full-time appointment during the university’s academic year and a reduced summer appointment advising undeclared freshmen and transfer students during the summer Orientation program that runs from early-June to mid-July.  Salary:  $27,000 - $32,000 with excellent benefits.

Start date:  May 18, 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.
