The English Department at the University of Wisconsin--Stevens Point welcomes you to its Web Site, which is designed to offer general information about our programs and faculty, and provide resources for current and prospective students.
The English Department is the largest department in the university, which is a decided advantage to our students because of the broad spectrum of expertise we can provide. The majority of our staff has earned the doctorate in English. While many of our faculty are published scholars and writers, our major interest is in undergraduate teaching. Consequently, we maintain small class sizes to facilitate the interchange of ideas, and we schedule no large lecture classes.
In addition to a major and minor in English (both leading to teacher certification), we have a writing minor and a technical writing minor. The English Department at UW-SP is the only department in the State of Wisconsin to be recognized by UW-System as a Center of Excellence in Writing. Our program is flexible; we offer many choices of courses to fulfill our major and minor requirements. We encourage students to broaden their education by requiring programs of study including both English and American literature, courses in major authors, and a course of study in the English language. Many of our students become teachers; others use the English major/minor to pursue business, professional and writing careers.
We have a strong department staffed by people with varied interests and talents, and we believe an English major's experience with us will be a good one. If you are a prospective major visiting Stevens Point, please stop in and see me at 486, Collins Classroom Center; I will be happy to talk with you and answer any questions you may have. Also feel free to contact me by telephone (715/346-4757) or email (Dr. Michael Williams).
